Joint Statement: Learning Disabilities, Dyslexia, and Vision – 2009

Individuals with ADHD may also have learning disabilities. It is important to understand what a learning disability is and how it can be treated. The American Academy of Ophthalmology has released a statement on treatments such as vision therapy, colored lenses, and eye exercises, based on a review of the literature.

The Academy does not endorse these treatments because they lack scientific evidence. Additionally, they explain that while vision problems may contribute to reading difficulties, they do not cause learning disabilities. Specific recommendations are offered for how to help children who are suspected to have learning disabilities.
